Bell (Coco) Mrs. Cora Bernice Lee
Bell was born April 11, 1925 in Denison Texas the third daughter of the late
Frank and Estella Joshua Lee. She attended Terrell Schools and was an honor
graduate of Terrell High School in 1941. After graduation, she enrolled at

Austin, Texas where she
received her Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. She later received her Master’s
degree of Teaching in education from Southeastern State University in Durant,
OK. Cora completed post-graduate study coursework at Colorado State
University, Austin College, and Prairie View A&M University. She was a
member of Zeta Phi Beta sorority. Mrs. Bell taught
at Langston School in Denison, Texas for two years before moving to Terrell
School where she taught eighth grade science and choir. Her music students at
Terrell ranked among the best in the state. Under her guidance, they were
state winners of the Interscholastic League for Solo and Mixed Octet. Cora
retired from the classroom in 1983. Cora’s teaching career spanned more than
41 years. Mrs. Bell was
preceded in death in 1995 by her husband Joseph W. Bell, the couple married
July 8, 1954. Mrs. Bell has always been an active member of the Denison
Community, continuing to be involved after her retirement. She served
thirteen years as a Crossing Guard for the Denison Public Schools. Cora
founded the Weekend Meals for Senior Citizens and served as its chair
and co-chair for more than twenty years. She served as a volunteer for the Jack
and Jill Day Care Center, Denison, TX. She is a long time member of Haven
Chapel United Methodist Church, Denison Texas. Cora has served as a teacher
and superintendent of classes for youth and adults. She was a member of the
Haven Chapel Choir, where she served as the director and Federated Choirs for
thirteen years. Cora’s accomplishments, affiliations and awards over the
years are many: Black Chamber of
Commerce Member, Dedication to Community and Terrell Service Award, Denison
Hi Cultural Heritage Award, Grayson County 4-H Club Award, Outstanding
Teacher Award, McDaniel Jr. High School, City of Denison, and Certificate of
Appreciation, Denison Public Library Board. Other positions held by
Cora are Associate Matron, Queen Elizabeth Chapter Order of Eastern Star,
President of the Links Civic and Social Club, and Charter Founder, First
President of Texoma Business and Professional Club. Cora taught three, and
in some cases four generations of students though she was not blessed with
any children of her own. She is survived by a host of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Cora Lee Bell has
influenced and touched many lives during her years of teaching and community
service. |
